Have you ever washed someone’s feet? Last night we had communion and Anabaptists still adhere to Christ’s example to wash one anothers feet.
It is a powerfully moving experience. I’ve participated in foot washing services before, but I think each one brings a deeper meaning to the act of participating in something so lowly with your Christian brothers.
Our church is small and so it is easy to get to wash feet with someone that is not your age. There is something about washing with someone that is much older or much younger (my case is usually much older). The serving mentality even more moving when you are washing with large age difference.
I washed with our bishop. Sitting on the bench while the man that is usually on the pulpit is at your feet, gently washing your feet is humbling. Being on the floor washing his feet is humbling in a different way.
Thinking about servanthood is easier done when you get participate in the discipline of foot washing.
